One of our favorite cold weather meals is classic shepherd’s pie. In this less classic version, you get plenty of veggie goodness from mashed sweet potatoes. This is a delicious take on traditional shepherd’s pie, especially if you’re switching from white potatoes (or if you just like the taste!).

Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

You may be wondering if you can make shepherd’s pie with sweet potatoes. While white potatoes are key to traditional Irish cuisine, no one is saying you can’t use sweet potatoes! Indeed, our family prefers the taste. There is no difference between white potatoes or sweet potatoes, it’s just a matter of personal preference.

If you’re doing the Whole 30, which doesn’t allow dairy (and love sweet potatoes), this version is easy to adapt. Not only is it healthy and easy, it’s Paleo, gluten-free, and can easily be made dairy-free.

How to Make Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie

My shepherd’s pie recipe is very similar to most, but adds kale for a little extra veggie content and swaps out the traditional potatoes for sweet potatoes. This recipe is similar to my meatloaf cupcakes but has more veggies.

To make the casserole, I brown the ground beef with the seasonings, then stir in the diced vegetables, heat through, and add to the casserole. I have a deep oven safe skillet that I use for two purposes and save myself a pot wash.

While the meat was cooking, I mashed the sweet potatoes with butter and salt and spread them on top of the meat and vegetable mixture when done. To save myself a little time, I usually make extra sweet potatoes for another meal earlier in the week and then pull them out of the refrigerator when I’m ready to use them.

Shepherd’s Pie Ingredients and Substitutions

While I love kale for added nutrients, you can skip it if you just like mixed greens. Or use another leafy green vegetable like spinach or chard instead. If you want to add more flavor, add a little coconut aminos, Worcestershire sauce, or balsamic vinegar for added depth.

Want to go dairy-free? Use coconut oil instead of butter and skip the cream cheese. If you still want your sweet potato topping to be creamier, try adding a little coconut milk when you mash it. If dairy isn’t an issue at all, shepherd’s pie with cheese on top is also delicious!

I used ground beef for this recipe because it’s readily available, but you can also use ground lamb for a more traditional flavor. If you want a lower-calorie or lower-fat version, ground turkey works well. While I’m not a vegetarian, I’ve heard that cooked lentils work well in place of minced meat.

Quick Tips

To save time on sweet potatoes, you can bake them ahead of time. I’ll make some earlier in the week and take them out of the freezer when needed. You can bake them for about an hour until tender. For a faster version, cook diced sweet potatoes for about 10 minutes, drain, and use in this recipe.

I love meal prepping and this is a great recipe. You can even bake the ingredients in small mason jars for easy packed lunches!

Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months. To freeze, place unbaked layered shepherd’s pie in a freezer-safe container and wrap tightly. Let it thaw in the refrigerator, then bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. I like to double the recipe and freeze half for later use.

If you love sweet potatoes as much as we do, give this recipe a try!

Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

This healthier version of Shepherd’s Pie features creamy sweet potato as a topping. This is a favorite in our family and my kids love helping with the layering.

  • Preheat oven to 350°F

  • Brown meat in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • Mix 1 teaspoon salt and all remaining seasonings and transfer to a large bowl.

  • Add the onions and kale to the pan and sauté until slightly softened, then add to the meat.

  • Pour the mixed vegetables into the pot and heat over low heat.

  • While the vegetables are heating, mash the cooked sweet potatoes with the butter and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt until smooth.

  • Add the mixed vegetables to the meat mixture, sprinkle the arrowroot on top, and stir to combine.

  • Pour the meat/vegetable mixture into a 9×13 baking dish and spread evenly. Add sweet potato puree and spread evenly on top.

  • Bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes.

  • When done, top with a dollop of cream cheese, if desired and enjoy.
