I have been breastfeeding Jonah for 14 months. We love that it’s so comfortable and convenient, but it’s not always easy. We had a hard time getting him to latch on for the first few days and the hospital recommended we use nipple shields.
The shield was very effective and we were able to eat. However, Jonah lost more than 10% of his weight within the first week. He became very irritable right after feeding and cried a lot at night. With worries and doubts, we supplemented him with two 4-ounce bottles of formula every day to help him gain weight quickly and satisfy his hunger.
He has definitely gained weight too! This allowed us to discharge him since he had gained a lot of weight.
Does he look more satisfied? Not really. In hindsight, I believe Jonah’s fussing was normal newborn behavior. So we continued supplementing for 5 weeks and then tapered off the formula and I pumped to increase my supply. We went back to exclusive breastfeeding, which is exactly what I wanted.
Eventually, at about four months, we also quit the nipple shields. Jonah decided he didn’t like them and made a fuss until I removed them. Oh, the pain! My breasts were not used to his latches, and there was no shield to protect them.
This reminds me of the review of Weleda Beautiful Soothing Treatment Oil. Nipple creams and creams are very helpful and I used them in the early days of breastfeeding. But I really wanted something to massage because my chest hurts. I also occasionally get clogged milk bubbles or ducts that require massage and heat to clear. Weleda Treatment Oil is perfect for this!
“Massage with oil cares for the breasts, stimulating the skin, blood circulation and warming the breast tissue,” says Weleda.
They do not claim that their oils can increase milk supply. They do say that the herbs in formula are “traditionally used during breastfeeding to support healthy lactation and stimulate free milk flow.”
However, this formula does contain galactagogues (substances that increase milk supply), which are used by nursing mothers to support milk production.
It’s important to note that you shouldn’t rely on galactagogues to increase your milk supply. The most natural and reliable way to increase milk production is to increase the frequency and/or duration of feeding/pumping.
Let’s take a look at its beneficial ingredients:
Fennel is a phytoestrogenic herb used by women to increase their milk supply. The great thing about fennel is that research supports its traditional uses. It can be applied topically as an essential oil or consumed. Fennel can also help relieve colic in breastfed babies. Read this great article to learn more about how breastfeeding mothers can use fennel.

Breastfeeding women use cilantro as a lactation aid and to treat colic, however, there are no studies confirming its efficacy.

Marjoram is an anti-inflammatory, lactogenic herb with a history of supporting a healthy milk supply. Likewise, there is no evidence that it increases milk production.

An easy-to-absorb carrier oil that moisturizes the skin without being too heavy – useful when your next breastfeeding session isn’t too far away.

In the early days, I did struggle to find time to massage with the Weleda Treatment Oil as it is supposed to be used after feeding. I found that if the baby is fed intensively, there may not be much time until the next feeding! But the herbal scent in Weleda Treatment Oil seems to disappear quickly.

It increases the rate at which I become disappointed. The combination of massaging and using Weleda Treatment Oil improved the speed of my letdown reflex, which meant less work for Jonah. In fact, he might be a little surprised that he has to do so little to get the milk flowing!
Pampering factor! Great for self-care as it helps me feel comforted and cared for. I feel very comfortable after massaging with this oil. My boobs work so hard!
Repair blockage. Oil helps move lumpy debris and clogged pipes. Lots of heat and massage to win!
Increase milk supply? The herbs in Weleda Care Oil are traditionally used to support breastfeeding, but are not intended to increase milk supply. So who knows? I can’t say if it works because there’s no reliable way to know.
Regular massage is necessary to maintain results. I try to get a massage once a day.
If you prefer oil for breast massage, or have clogged milk ducts that need to be addressed, I would recommend Weleda Treatment Oil. It speeds up elimination, warms the breasts, feels very comfortable, and is a great way to practice self-care.
