As I develop each edition of my EBT training program for therapists, I ask myself: “What is EBT?”

In the past, the answer was more scientific. It is self-directed, professionally facilitated, positive neuroplasticity of the stress response.

yes but what is that Really?

My thinking: This is a way for each of us to unlock our potential to be healthy, happy, and give back to the world in a way that makes our lives whole.

Here we go again, what is that? real What does it mean?

However, as stress overload becomes our daily biological diet, these cliche answers border on annoying. We know Freud was right; it is the unconscious memory system that shapes our responses, and the emergent effects of all our wires that give us self-awareness.

With recent upgrades in the method and applications, unconscious memory systems are rapidly becoming so well understood that the method is likely to become mainstream.

The unconscious memory system of our emotional brain is the controller, and now we have more ability to control it through EBT.

That’s not to say that the unconscious mind couldn’t have been rewired before. Prayer, meditation, or just thinking about our situation every day will do. My own habit, however, is to put anything that “bothers” me into the recycling tool, confident that I will discover that my unconscious store of frivolous, unreasonable expectations is the cause. Then I can work through the problem, or at least relax because I understand myself better.

When explaining EBT to therapists, I say that it is a set of tools for self-regulating and re-solidifying faulty wires that can be used by the therapist personally and to train the patient.

However, with the latest version of the app, people are learning how to use EBT effectively faster. I think we’re on the verge of launching an app that will purposefully redirect everyday overreactions, bad emotions, and disconnections, allowing people to take care of their subconscious mind just like they do with their oral health or fitness routines.

The implications of this statement are almost chilling. What does it mean that we have significant control over our own paths to resilience, so that we can experience joy if we choose, no matter the circumstances?

The cognitive therapy community is right in some ways that our thoughts are who we are, but we are focusing on one part of the circuit. If this wiring were a homeostatic, health-promoting, resilient circuit, then mood would be low and stress chemicals wouldn’t bother us. However, if our thoughts border on anything distorted, maladaptive, or harmful, then it’s a symptom of activation of one of those non-homeostatic, disease-promoting, reactive circuits, that’s a different story.

Now we can recognize what physiological state we are in, and if those stress lines are dominating us, we can fight them off a little, or even shut them down within a few minutes. With EBT skills in our organic “pocket” we can be as happy and even healthy as we want to be.

EBT appears to be growing rapidly as more and more people “seize” the desire to become EBTers. In today’s intensive group, members talked about the changes they have seen in themselves – we are only three weeks into intensive group. One new member, who started while still in the Basics class, shared that she felt like her entire life experience had changed after rewiring her food circuitry and emotional circuitry.

I saw her changes in real time during our daily group, so when she shared this it rang true and I went to Brain State 4. If she can change so quickly, are we at the beginning of a shift in expectations about life? Over the past two years, this approach has developed skills at both ends of the stress continuum—enhancing happiness, love, and virtue, and holding trauma in, grinding it out, and spitting it out.

Perhaps this new iteration, dubbed “EBT 3.0” by EBT Medical Director Michele Welling, MD, will reset personal control over more aspects of health, happiness, quality of life, and even the way we live our lives. We learn about artificial intelligence and how it is changing our world. What if we distributed EBT the same way we distribute AI? If we change our emotional world by rewiring the circuits that control everything that matters, maybe we will have a chance to save the planet and live in peace and love.

This is an idea worth thinking about. . . Sit back and feel what I feel. I hope you will, and who knows what might happen if we prioritize cultivating EBT practices and find ways to enhance our ability to access the unconscious mind and rewire it?
