I’m so excited to get back to writing after a year’s break to celebrate my first year of motherhood! First, I decided to focus on a new study published in JAMA Network Open that explores the potential benefits and return on investment of implementing lifestyle interventions to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes. I’m back to writing regularly and am excited to see how the HEOR field is progressing post-COVID.
The above-mentioned studies aimed to assess the economic feasibility of such interventions and their potential to improve maternal and child health outcomes. Dr. Lloyd et al. A modeling approach was used to estimate the costs and benefits of lifestyle interventions for pregnant women at risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes such as gestational diabetes and hypertension. Interventions include dietary changes, physical activity promotion, and behavioral support.
The study was conducted in Australia and included all Australian women expected to give birth between 2022 and 2026 (approximately 330,000 people each year). The intervention took the form of structured diet and physical activity delivered by trained health professionals and was compared with usual care that did not include structured lifestyle intervention (usually in Australia)
The study found that the return on investment (ROI) of implementing lifestyle interventions over a five-year program was 4.75 AUD for every A$1 invested (USD 4.73 for every US$1 invested).
The findings suggest that investing in lifestyle intervention programs for pregnant women may be a cost-effective strategy to improve pregnancy outcomes, reduce health care costs, and generate economic benefits. This study highlights the potential economic benefits of being proactive in promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors during pregnancy.
